ALCOA QUITS THE PORTOVESME SMELTER AND…

HEADS TO NEW BUSINESSES

Alcoahas finally decided to quit the Portovesme smelter in Sardinia.
The company has communicated it intends to “start preparatory activities aiming at reclaiming the Portovesme site to develop new business opportunities.”
The corporate management also reminds that this decision was taken after verifying the impossibility to sell the smelter despite almost four years of joint efforts with the Italian Government to find a suitable purchaser.
“Our current target – the Alcoa top management stresses – is to fulfil our obligations and to get the site ready to attract new business and create new jobs.”
The Portovesme smelter production activity was stopped in November 2012 and the plant was finally closed in August 2014.
